Interview with Maria Lynn Ehren (มารีญา ลินน์ เอียเรี่ยน)

Maria Lynn Ehren is in her final year at ISB where she has attended for the past 7 years. She is full IB Diploma student who is also busy applying for colleges; she is just trying to get through her senior year like the rest of us. Maria Lynn Ehren is also one of the top models in Thailand, appearing on the covers and in spreads of the majority of magazines sold in Thailand, on catwalks, and on everyday television. She knows many of the rich and famous in Bangkok today and is very involved in the industry. She seems to live in two different worlds and says that balancing them is a constant struggle. She opens up about her modeling career in an interview with the international reporter, Megan Fernandes.

Intl: How did you start modeling and how long have you been doing it for? What type of work do you do?

I started in 8th grade right before I turned 14 because I used to do ballet at emporium and one of the teachers saw me and told me her girlfriend was in the modeling industry and she wanted to take a picture of me and give it to her. Basically, just from that, they asked me to walk in Bangkok International Fashion Week and I walked two shows for free and then from there it started going. I started getting paid and it became a hobby. I started out with catwalks and photo shoots and then I branched into music videos and commercials. Now I host for a TV program as well.

Intl: What do you like about it? What are some of the perks?

The perks are for sure getting to know people and I can’t deny that the money is not a benefit but I enjoy working with different people all the time. From juggling everything I do, I know now how to manage my time a lot better also.

Intl: What do you not like about it?

It takes time away from homework, friends, and family time. A lot of times people only see the benefits of modeling but they don’t realize there are bad consequences.

Intl: Do you think that people judge you based on your modeling? How do you feel about that?

It’s inevitable for people to judge, but as long as the people who are important to me know who I really am, then other people’s opinions don’t matter. I mean, they do matter but I try to not let them affect me.
Intl: How does it make you feel that your friends view you as Maria first and model second?
It feels good. It’s a nice escape from the industry because I almost have two lives and my friends are so important to me. I am able to do normal high school things with them and we have a lot of fun and I can talk about anything with them. With their love and support, they complete me.

Intl: How do you want people to see you?

Obviously I want people to view me in a good way but at times everyone has different views. I consider my modeling a hobby just like any other hobby so I don’t want people to think modeling is just some stupid thing where I dress up to look pretty. That’s not what I do and I don’t want people to only see that because there are so many aspects that people don’t know about.

Intl: What are your plans for the future regarding modeling, especially since it’s your senior year and college is coming up?

Like I said modeling is a hobby and I enjoy it but I don’t want it to be my life. There are good and bad things about it. Senior year has honestly been really difficult and I can’t do as much work as before. It is a very time consuming job and since I’m also focusing on getting into a good college, it’s another reason why I’m doing a bit less work now.

Intl: What are some of the most recent things you’ve worked on?

Well just a few days ago I did this music video for this band called the ‘Richman Toy’. It’s a Thai band in the same label as me. I’ve been doing photo shoots regularly for Thai magazines such as ‘Dichun’ and ‘Volume’ and Fashion shows here and there and the regular VJing for Chic channel for the program called Spotlight. It’s really funny actually because not a lot of people recognize me including my parents, but a few of my closest friends (Lisa, Mal, Megan) always seem to know which girl is me.
